In 1994, RRC installed 36 nest boxes on the Rainbow River. That number has grown to almost 50 boxes. Wood ducks won't build their own nest, and will not reuse an existing nest. RRC cleans out the boxes every year, makes necessary repairs, then adds 4 inches of fresh cedar chips, In 1994, only 17% of RRC's next boxes were productive. By 1999, 85% of nest boxes were productive, and in 2023, the nest boxes were 98% productive!
The next boxes are numbered and mapped with GPS coordinates to assist emergency response services.
